A to Z Guide

The Sixth Edition of The A to Z Guide to Afghanistan Assistance is available in English, Dari and Pashto at the AREU office in Kabul. You may also download them for free from the menu on the right.

The A to Z Guide to Afghanistan Assistance, AREU's flagship publication, aims to ensure a shared vocabulary and common understanding of the forces at play in Afghanistan by providing a glossary of assistance terms, an overview of Afghanistan's system of government, a series of locator maps, key primary documents, and an extensive contact directory.

Transformation of Afghanistan's political and operational structures over the past few years have brought about radical changes in the way humanitarian and development assistance is delivered, managed and coordinated, and the arrival of many new assistance actors has prompted an equally radical turnover of both international and Afghan staff. Understanding the old and new aid structures and the confusing array of assistance organisations and processes in Afghanistan poses a formidable challenge to both new arrivals and "old Afghan hands".

With this in mind, AREU has published annual editions of The A to Z Guide since 2002.
